Poem: Waiting

If I stood under this tree long enough

Waiting for you to come back

Its leaves would darken to brown

Wrinkled, ancient dragon’s skin

They would blow away down the street

Crashing against buildings

Haphazardly, like deafened bats

The frost would come

Cover the bare, beseeching claws of the tree with

Crystals, each perfect, yet each different

Then

If I stood under this tree long enough

The sun would come back

And burst the knuckles into buds

The dragon’s new skin shining in the spring light

Warming into summer

And eventually

It would come round to when you trusted me

And you’d love me again

If I stood under this tree long enough

Waiting for you to come back

But I’ve got a feeling

Just a sneaking suspicion

That there might be a

Flaw

In that reasoning somewhere
